IEshikawa

As an organization, UP CIEM puts value into delivering quality events to utilize its member's capabilities. Its foundation is built on the core of its values, which includes the use of industrial engineering knowledge to provide service and extend it to the maximum. This pursuit led to the birth of IEshikawa.

The first IEshikawa was held in the year 2005, with participants coming from different universities and colleges from Luzon. The event featured workshops useful for the IE profession and relevant talks from esteemed experts in the industrial engineering field. As the first was successful, IEshikawa has since become an annual activity. What used to be a proposed concept by several members of UP CIEM now caters to growing numbers of participants.

As Industrial Engineers, the organization is naturally equipped to seek improvements, thus the event's continuous growth. This year, now on its 12th, IEshikawa expects to become the most-prestigious summit for the Industrial Engineering community, providing a more personalized experience to the participants that imparts deeper nationalistic understanding in Industrial Engineering.

Bounce

Before the impending wave of requirements, exams, and stress - akin to almost any semester in UP - CIEMers started their academic year by attending BOUNCE: CrossFit, the first of many lined up for the semester. Held last August 14, 2017 at the Pound for Pound Fitness Diliman, attendees were trained by Coach Jon. Each attendee had to cyclically go through a round of 12 stations. After every round, CIEMers were given 3-5 minutes of rest. The stations were different from each other - each station was supposed to exercise a specific muscle or body part (i.e. sit-ups for the core muscles, pushups for the arms and shoulders, etc.) All in all, it was a tiring but fulfilling day for all the participants.

hiraeth

Held last March 31 - exactly a year after the misfortune - UP CIEM organized Hiraeth, a benefit concert for the UP Faculty Center and its community. The event aimed to raise funds for the rehabilitation of the UP Faculty Center and to spread awareness through sharing the stories of the people affected by the tragedy. It is in the spirit of Hiraeth to reminisce the deep history of UP Faculty Center as a symbol of accomplishment and hard work, and as the home of the university's current and past torchbearers of knowledge. Music filled the night with performances from Ourselves the Elves, Fools and Foes, Brisom, Oswald Sleeps Tonight - OST, Wish Sticks, The Roomhoppers, and Aninag Anino. Spoken word artists Jerome Almanza and Jenilyn Manzon of KM64, Dani Nakpil, and Miggy Arnonobal also graced the event with their pieces about nationalism and the youth of today.

learn from the masters

Writing can serve a million purposes: to inform, to express one's self, to inspire, to entertain, but most importantly - to tell a story. Last October 2016, the Publication and Records Committee of UP CIEM conducted the first installment for this academic year of Learn from the Masters (LFTM). The series aim to educate the members on skills essential for publicity and secretariat tasks. This semester, the event focused on journalism and creative writing. Mr. Bryan Ezra Gonzales, a BA Journalism student in UP Diliman and current Vice President for Academic Affairs of UP Journalism Club, talked about the basic principles of journalism. On the other hand, Ms. Dany Abuel and Ms. Mia Noelle Rodriguez, a BA Creative Writing and BA Journalism student, respectively, introduced the creative non-fiction genre in literature. Surely, everyone who attended the event acquired a lot of knowledge which are useful in understanding the ever-changing landscape of media and literature.

makiealam

An educational discussion on the Republic Act 10931 or "Universal Access to Quality Tertiary Education Act" was held by the External Affairs Committee as part of the MakIEalam project last September 14, 2017 at the Melchor Hall, College of Engineering. Mr. David Baldiva, Mr. Ezron Cabrera, Mr. Paul Christian Yang-Ed were invited to give different perspectives on the context and implementation of the said act. Mr. Baldiva, president of the UP Economics Towards Consciousness, a student of the UP school of Economics shared his insights about scarcity of Philippine resources; giving emphasis on opportunity costs, resource allocation, paying capacity and sustainability. He then applied economics concepts to discuss whether or not the decision to allocate resources on free tuition was the best option. On the other hand, Mr. Cabrera and Mr. Yang-Ed, Secretary General and Vice Chairperson of Agham Youth focused on discussing the feasibility study conducted on the free tuition act. They presented numbers to give an accurate estimate on the required budget to sustain free education and how it can be afforded by the government. They also gave rebuttals on the Commission on higher Education’s (CHED) statements on why the free tuition act should not be passed. The Free tuition act gives full tuition and miscellaneous fee subsidy for students in 112 State Universities and Colleges (SUCs), local universities and colleges, and state-run technical-vocational schools. Estimates have been given by different experts but have yet to come up with a definite amount ranging from 9 Billion to 100 Billion. There hasn’t been an announcement from the government whether or not the act is to be continued for the succeeding years.

outlook

Outlook is a non-committal event that aims to introduce UP CIEM to the students outside the organization. Held last September 13, the event kicked off with a light ice breaker to acquaint the attendees with the resident members. The organization was joined by two speakers: Jeiel Ruth Regala, a resident member, and Mr. Jesus Lorenzo Guerrero, an alumnus of the organization. Ms. Regala presented the events and projects of UP CIEM as well as the achievements of the organization through the years. Afterwards, Mr. Guerrero gave a lighthearted talk on how UP CIEM molded him to become an excellent student leader way back in his undergraduate days and how the values of the organization consistently guide him in his current career.
